Philip Perceval

Commodore 1901-1903

Philip Perceval started sailing with his father who had been elected to the RYS in 1858. At the age of twenty, he had started racing on his account. He was a great friend of the Hon George Colville who was a keen rival of his afloat. Both men were very keen on sailing boats that were too small for RYS regattas, which is why they both became founder members of the ISC.

After the success with his 8-ton cutter Dorothy, he bought the five-raters Lollipop. He followed this by building another Glycera which he continued to race very successfully.

Other yachts followed and his success as a helmsman with his reputation put him in much demand to race other people's yachts. It was said of Prince Henry of Battenberg's yacht Asphodel that she never went better than when Philip Perceval was on the helm.

Philip Perceval's story continues in 1944 when he became the first Commodore to serve a second term.
