'Giles Cartoon'

This cartoon was given to the 'Island' by Giles with best wishes after he visited the Club in 1957.

Ronald 'Carl' Giles often referred to simply as GILES was a cartoonist best known for his work for the British newspaper The Daily Express.

This sketch gives an excellent idea of the interior of the old clubroom and is incredibly correct in all its details, flags, design of curtains, etc. Even the air holes in the wood around the top of the walls are included. Chief Steward Burman told the author of the ISC History Book that Giles made no notes at all for this cartoon. He just came up the stairs, stood in the doorway looked at the clubroom steady for about ten minutes, and then left.
