General Charles Baring

Commodore 1889-1890

Charles Baring served with the Coldstream Guards in the Crimean War as a young man. Upon his return from the Crimea (aged 27 and already a Lieutenant Colonel), Charles Baring took up yachting. He had a fine home built in Cowes called Nubia House. In 1856 he owned a cutter of fifty tons called Caprice. He became one of the original members of the Yacht Racing Association, as the RYA was called until more recent times. He was elected a member of the RYS in 1858 but sadly he was a member and the first Commodore of the ISC for only a short time. He caught a cold and died very suddenly on 7th February 1890. less than a year after the Club was founded. but he had set the Club well on its way in his short time, having paid for the construction of the Clubhouse, but especially for the new Club upon land that he owned. His building of 1889 served the Club well until it was demolished in 1961 before the construction of the present Clubhouse.
