Rupert Kilkelly had retired from the Poona Horse Regiment of the Indian Army as Lt. Colonel having seen earlier service in the Devonshire Regiment. He owned a Y-class yacht, Genesta. During his time as Commodore at the ISC, he also held Flag rank at the Royal London YC and managed both duties with great charm and skill, never allowing a conflict of interest.
