H.M. Ships Crests/Plaques


All these crests/plaques were originally displayed on the bar's back wall until it was rebuilt in 2004. They were later taken to the Classic Boat Museum to be held in storage at East Cowes. They have now been returned to the ISC in 2022 and are displayed in the upper stairwell. These 17 Royal Naval crests were originally presented to the ISC when these vessels visited Cowes as Guard Ships during the traditional 'Cowes Weeks' over some years

The top section displays the ship's crests. The bottom section shows some yacht clubs and various crests.

USS RHODES

USS Rhodes (Edsall Class Destroyer Escort)

Built by Brown Shipping Cg Co. Houston Texas.

Commissioned Oct. 1943 and decommissioned June 1946 after WW1. Recommissioned in Aug 1955 as a Radar Picket Escort and finally decommissioned July 1963 and sold for scrap 1974.

HMS RHYL

HMS Rhyl (Rothesay Class Frigate)

Built by HM Dockyard Portsmouth commissioned in October 1960 and decommissioned in 1983.

She was sunk as a target in 1985

HMS ARDENT

HMS Ardent (Type 21 Frigate)

Built by Yarrow Shipbuilders Ltd. Glasgow, Scotland, and commissioned October 1977.

Ardent took part in the Falklands War and was sunk in Falklands Sound on 21 May 1982.

HMS ANTELOPE


HMS Antelope (Type 21 Frigate)

Built at Vosper Thornycroft, Woolston, Southampton, and commissioned in 1975.

Antelope was sunk on 23 May 1982 in San Carlos Water in the Falklands War.

HMS ZULU

HMS Zulu (Tribal Class Destroyer)

Built by Alexander Stephens & Sons Linthouse Glasgow Scotland and commissioned in September 1938.

Zulu was sunk by German aircraft off Tobruk on 16th September 1942

HNLMS ZEELAND

HNLMS Zeeland (Holland Class Destroyer)

RN Survey Ship (Echo Class). Built-in 1959 by WM Blackmore & Sons, Bideford, for RN Inshore Survey Squadron.

Sold out of service in 1985 to Marine Society.

Netherlands Navy. Built by Royal Schelde, Vlissingen, Holland. Commissioned Mar. 1955 and Decommissioned 1979.


ULLA

Ulla (Minesweeper Adjudant Class)

Built-in Quincy Navy Yard, USA. in 1956 as a Minesweeper and later sold to the Spanish Navy. Converted to a Patrol Boat and sunk in 1999 to form an artificial reef

HMS WOLVERTON

HMS Wolverton (Ton-Class Coastal Minsweeper)

Built by Montrose Shipyard, Commissioned in 1958 for the 100th Minesweeping Squadron based in Portsmouth. Converted to Patrol Craft in 1971 Rosyth, Decommissioned 1985.

HMS FALMOUTH

HMS Falmouth (Rothesay Class Frigate)

Built by Swan Hunter and Wigham Richardson, and commissioned July 1961.

Decommissioned in July 1984 and sold for scrap in 1989.

HMS NOTTINGHAM

HMS Nottingham (Type 42 Class Destroyer)

Built by Vosper Thorneycroft Woolston Yard and commissioned in April 1983 and decommissioned in April 2010

This the ship ran aground on Wolf Rock off the coast of Australia causing ÂŁ26,000,000 worth of damage. A hole 160ft. was torn down her side from bow to bridge. She was sold for scrap in Turkey in 2011.

HMS LEANDER

HMS Leander (Leander Class Frigate)

Built by Harland and Wolff Ltd. Belfast, Northern Ireland commissioned in March 1963 and decommissioned in April 1987.

Her career came to an end in 1989 when during a Naval exercise being used as target practice she was sunk by a Sea Dart Missile, 3 Exocets, and 1 Gravity Bomb.

HMS ANDROMEDA

HMS Andromeda (Leander Class Frigate)

Built at HM Dockyard Portsmouth and commissioned Dec 1968.

Andromeda took part in the Falklands War and was sold to India in 1966 for use as a training ship, being renamed, INS Krishna. She was decommissioned in May and finally sunk in the Bay of Bengal for target practice by Indian navy Ships.

HMY BRITANNIA

HMY Britannia

Built by John Brown & Co. Ltd. Clydebank, Dumbarton, Scotland. Commissioned in Jan. 1954 and decommissioned in Dec. 1997.

The Royal Yacht Britannia is the former royal yacht of the monarch Queen Elizabeth.

Now retired from royal service, Britannia is permanently berthed at Ocean Terminal Leith in Edinburgh, Scotland. She is open to the public as a museum and is a popular visitor attraction.

EARL OF ROMNEY

HMS Enterprise

RN Survey Ship (Echo Class). Built in 1959 by WM Blackmore & Sons, Bideford, for RN Inshore Survey Squadron.

Sold out of service in 1985 to Marine Society.

Earl of Romney

Was HMS Enterprise and operated by Gravesend Sea School. Sold in 2005 and sailed to Alexandria Egypt.

HMS FALKEN

HMS Falken

This sloop-rigged barque was built in 1947 in the Naval Dockyard Stockholm, Sweden, and designed by Tore Herlin.

HMS GLAMORGAN

HMS Glamorgan (County Class Destroyer)

Built by Vickers-Armstrongs, Newcastle upon Tyne and commissioned October 1966. She saw active service in the Falklands War.

Decommissioned in July 1986 and sold to Chile in September 1986 and named Almirante Latome. She was decommissioned in 1966 and sunk on 11th April 2005 on her way to the breakers yard.

This sloop-rigged barque was built in 1947 in the Naval Dockyard Stockholm, Sweden, and designed by Tore Herlin.


HMS GLADAN & HMS FALKEN SAILING TOGETHER

THESE TWO VESSELS ABOVE ARE FROM THE SWEDISH NAVY'S SAIL/TRAINING SCHOONER DIVISION, BUILT-IN 1947 AND STILL SAILING TODAY.

How these two crests came into the possession of the ISC is not known!
