Commodore 1900-1901

The Earl of Harrington owned some 18,000 acres and is reputed to have owned homes at Elvaston Castle, Derbyshire; Gasworth, Macclesfield; Harrington House, Charing Cross, London; and Bartly Cross, Totton, Hampshire. He was MFH of the Harrington Hunt and had published Polo Pony Stud Book Vol 1. In addition to being Commandant of the South Derbyshire Battalion Home Guard, he was also Lt. Colonel commanding the Cheshire Yeomanry. It is therefore not surprising that the ISC saw little of its fourth Commodore.

 The Earl of Harrington's widowed mother lived in Cowes at Stanhope Lodge, which was built for the family.

 Although Lord Harrington was elected as Commodore at the AGM held on the 28th February of 1900, it was not until April that he was written to accept the Commodore ship. He also wrote on the subject in November. It is possible that the reason for this Commodore's very short term of office and also his apparent reluctance to accept the position of Commodore was the fact that he was to be made ADC to King Edward VII when he came to the throne in 1901.

 The Earl owned several small boats, which he changed with almost monotonous frequency. In 1894, he owned Leading Article, of 2 tons, and the 3-ton Tally Ho. By 1899, there were Triangles, 4 tons, and Vision. By 1900, only the four-year-old Vision remained in his possession, a 4-ton lugger of 36ft. LOA and a beam of 6.5ft. were built in Cowes by Sibbick.
