Michael Henderson

Commodore 1974-1976

Although he was born and brought up in London, Michael Henderson started sailing at the age of ten. After a nautical education in the training ship Conway, he joined the Blue Funnel line and saw war service at sea with this company. Having obtained his master's certificate he retired from the life of a professional seaman and went into industry.

After designing an excellent bilge pump he came to live in Cowes in 1957, where the bilge pumps for which his name has become so very well known were made.

He had a catamaran built called Golden Miller, with a very individual and highly successful masthead disc, which made her one of the few catamarans to be self-righting.

She was followed by Misty Miller in which Michael completed 1963 Fastnet. His next boat was the wooden Star Spinner, she was so much admired that seventeen GRP versions were built using her lines.

Michael joined the Junior Offshore Group soon after it was founded and became much involved in the forming of the safety rules for JOG. He went on to become the Hon, Secretary of the group before becoming its Captain and finally President.
